The Warsaw Trumpet Call – A Musical Tribute to Resilience
Every day at 11:15 AM, a haunting trumpet call—known as the Hejnal Warszawski—resounds from the clock tower of Warsaw’s Royal Castle This evocative moment has become a powerful symbol of the city’s perseverance and unity.
Why 11:15 AM?
On September 17, 1939, as the Second World War erupted, German bombs struck the castle’s tower, shattering its clock movement. The hands came to rest at 11:15—a frozen testament to Warsaw’s disruption. When the reconstructed tower’s clock restarted on July 19, 1974, it was deliberately set to chime at this significant hour, honoring the moment’s historical weight.

The Melody and Its Origins
Polish composer and educator Zbigniew Bagiński created the current trumpet melody in 1995, weaving in themes from patriotic songs such as “Warszawianka” and “Marsz na Mokotów”. The idea came from Warsaw insurgent Henryk Łagodzki, whose vision helped shape this musical tribute. In 2008 the melody became the official anthem of Warsaw.
Who Performs It?
While it once played from a recording, since 2008, the call has been performed live, and from 2017, trumpeters of the Warsaw City Guard have been its proud stewards. The solo performance is given from the western window of the tower—symbolically reaching into all directions, though only physically projecting toward the heart of Old Town.
