Katyn Museum

The murders committed in Katyn, Smolensk, Kharkiv, and other remote areas of the Russian forests remain a subject that has yet to fully enter the mainstream. This museum offers comprehensive insight into these events. It is also one of the most modern and thoughtfully designed museums in Warsaw.

Soon after entering, visitors will notice that the exhibition makes extensive use of symbols and metaphors. What may not be immediately clear at first—especially for international guests—is explained as the exhibition progresses.

The prehistory is presented in five relatively small rooms, followed by a detailed account of the events themselves. The final section illustrates the developments from the end of World War II to the present day. The text is concise—nothing more is written than necessary.

At the end, visitors descend one floor, where terracotta shelves display the personal belongings of the victims.

We find the museum’s presentation very impressive. One could even describe it as an artistically crafted exhibition. However, this museum does not make it onto a “best of” list, as we are aware that it deals with a very specific topic, which makes it a niche museum.

We recommend it because it is beautifully designed and thought-provoking. Not all of the texts are available in English, but those that are translated are more than sufficient to follow the narrative.

In our opinion, it is one of the most beautiful and modern museums in Warsaw. Exceptionally, the staff at the museum are extremely courteous, which is not always so apparent in state-run museums.
