Anielewicz Bunker on Mila Street 18

The bunker at 18 Mila Street in the Warsaw Ghetto was the last site of resistance during the Jewish Uprising of 1943. The heroes of the ghetto, including the commander Mordechaj Anielewicz, took their own lives to avoid falling into the hands of the Nazis.

T he Anielewicz Bunker is located at the intersection of Mila and Dubois Streets, where before the war the building at 18 Mila Street once stood.

During the Jewish Uprising of 1943, towards the end of the fighting, the members of the Jewish Combat Organization (ŻOB), led by Commander Mordechaj Anielewicz, hid in the basement of this building. They all lost their lives there.

The bunker no longer exists. It was filled in, and the bodies of the dead were never exhumed. In its place, on the initiative of the Central Committee of Jews in Poland, a memorial mound was built in 1946 using the rubble of nearby houses. On its top, a memorial stone was placed with inscriptions in Polish, Hebrew, and Yiddish.

In 2006, a pyramid-shaped obelisk was erected in front of the mound. On one side are the names of 51 identified fighters of the uprising.
