Pyzy, flaki gorace | Potato dumplings and tripe soup

Dumplings and tripe soup, known as Pyzy i Flaki, are served at the bistro of the same name in Warsaw’s Praga-North district and in the Old Town. Tripe soup in particular has a long tradition in Praga. The cuisine is simple, down-to-earth, and heartily delicious. Simple food, but full of flavor.

Please note There are two Pyzy i Flaki locations. Both are excellent; however, the venue in Praga-North is much smaller. Therefore, groups of six or more should choose the Old Town location.

Praga is considered Warsaw’s alternative district—rougher, more authentic, and full of contrasts. Brzeska Street in particular is infamous. This is exactly where the bistro Pyzy i Flaki is located—an establishment known less for appearances and far more for its food. What’s served here is classic, hearty home-style cooking: traditional dishes, robust and without frills. Portions are served in preserving jars—a nod to the former bazaars that once defined the neighborhood. Right next door you’ll still find the main gate to Warsaw’s oldest bazaar, which closed in 2020. At first glance, Brzeska Street may seem uninviting, but it is by no means dangerous. Those who embrace the surroundings soon notice that, over time, the place reveals a very distinctive, almost cozy atmosphere.

Honest cooking without shortcuts

In the end, the quality of the food is what matters—and this is where Pyzy i Flaki truly delivers. The dishes are not exclusive, but they are carefully and skillfully prepared. The cooks know how to do simple food right and how to avoid the usual pitfalls. Sit inside, watch the street life outside the window, and enjoy traditional dumplings—with or without meat—or an excellent Polish-style tripe soup.

Potato Dumplings

The dumplings are available with or without meat. Two large pieces are served in a preserving jar, decorated with a classic red-and-white checked napkin and accompanied by a wooden fork.

Tripe soup

In pre-war Praga, tripe soup was eaten everywhere and all the time, as the famous Warsaw cattle markets were located in this district. Tripe soup is, of course, not unique to Praga, but the Praga version was said to be exceptionally good.

The dumplings are also available without meat. In addition, meat-free pierogi can be ordered here. Be sure to mention that you are vegetarian.

The venue is definitely too narrow for a wheelchair. In good weather, you can also sit outside. Food must be ordered and paid for at the counter first; the staff will then bring it to the table.
