Holy Trinity Church

The Holy Trinity Church in Warsaw is a magnificent example of sacred architecture. Thanks to its excellent acoustics, piano concerts are also held here. The most famous concert was performed here by Frédéric Chopin for Tsar Alexander I in 1825.

T he Evangelical-Augsburg Holy Trinity Church on Małachowski Square is one of Warsaw’s most important neoclassical buildings. Its imposing dome has shaped the cityscape since the late 18th century and also tells the eventful story of the Protestant community in the Polish capital.

From Religious Prohibition to a Church of Their Own

For centuries, Warsaw’s Protestants had to fight for religious freedom and social recognition. It was not until 1768 that they were granted the right to practise their religion freely. A few years later, King Stanisław August Poniatowski approved the construction of a Lutheran church of their own, situated in the immediate vicinity of the Warsaw Royal Route. The design was created by Szymon Bogumił Zug, one of the most important architects of his time. The church was officially consecrated in 1781.

The church quickly developed into a religious, cultural and social centre. Prominent figures such as Samuel Bogumił Linde, Wojciech Gerson and Leopold Otto were associated with the congregation. Fryderyk Chopin also performed here as a young musician. The congregation operated schools, a hospital, an orphanage, retirement homes and numerous other social institutions. Its influence therefore extended far beyond its own religious community, making an important contribution to Warsaw’s social life.

The dome also played a special role in the modern surveying of Warsaw. During the 19th century, its cross served as the city’s geodetic reference point and formed the basis for the famous Lindley plans. During the Kościuszko Uprising, Polish officers also used the lantern of the dome as an observation point.

Destruction, Reconstruction and Remembrance

The church was severely damaged during the Second World War. The burning dome collapsed as early as 1939, while numerous Protestant clergy were persecuted and murdered. A difficult reconstruction process began after the war. The Holy Trinity Church was reconsecrated in 1958.

Today, it is not only an active place of worship but also an important centre of music, ecumenism and remembrance. Its history demonstrates how closely Warsaw’s Protestants were connected with the city’s cultural, social and political development and the permanent place they have occupied in the capital for centuries. Its distinctive dome remains their widely visible landmark to this day.
