Description of the Fountain Park
The Multimedia Fountain Park in Warsaw consists of four fountains and is located on Skwer I Dywizji Pancernej WP at the foot of the New Town. The complex lies between Boleść, Wybrzeże Gdańskie, Sanguszki and Rybaki streets. On the other side of the busy Wybrzeże Gdańskie is the Vistula Boulevard. The lower gardens of the Royal Castle are just over 500 metres away.
The area is sometimes considered part of the Podzamcze neighbourhood. Strictly speaking, however, Podzamcze itself lies directly below the Royal Castle. Before the present fountain complex was built, a kidney-shaped pool occupied the site.
Water, Light and Music
During the summer season, the Multimedia Fountain Park regularly transforms into a large open-air stage. From the beginning of May until the end of September, approximately 30-minute multimedia shows take place on Fridays and Saturdays. Water fountains, music, colourful LED lights, lasers and projections combine to create a single spectacle.
During the summer months, the events usually begin after dark. Admission is free. As a show may be cancelled due to the weather, for example, it is advisable to check the current times and announcements on the Fountain Park’s official website or Facebook page before visiting.
The first light show took place on 7 May 2011. The entire complex was opened to mark the 125th anniversary of Warsaw’s water and sewerage company, Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Wodociągów i Kanalizacji, commonly abbreviated as MPWiK.
A monument to William Heerlein Lindley stands beside the fountains. Together with his father, William Lindley, the British engineer designed Warsaw’s modern water supply and sewerage system. The municipal waterworks began operating in 1886 and significantly improved sanitary conditions in the rapidly growing city.
Technical Specifications of the Fountain Park
The entire complex consists of the following components:
- three water-filled pools and a so-called dry fountain,
- 367 water jets, 227 of which are digitally controlled,
- 295 RGB LED lights,
- 22 pumps with a total output of 285.5 kW,
- an RGB laser with an output of 15 W,
- a projector,
- a central Show Music Controller system.
The digitally controlled water jets allow the height, rhythm and movements of the fountains to be precisely synchronised with the music and lighting effects. This creates constantly changing water displays during the shows, which look particularly impressive when combined with projections on the fine water mist.
Visiting the Multimedia Fountain Park
Even outside the evening shows, the spacious complex is a popular place to spend time. Families, walkers and visitors to the nearby Old Town come here especially during the summer. The dry fountain allows children to play among the water jets.
As parking spaces directly beside the Fountain Park are limited, travelling by public transport is recommended. A visit to the park can also be easily combined with a walk through the New Town, a visit to the Royal Gardens or a stroll along the Vistula Boulevards.
